The Pioneer total abstinence association
The PTAA was formed in Cappagh on the 12th December 1955. The first officers elected were Rev E McCarthy PP, spiritual director; Patrick Liston, Knockdrumin: President; Stephen Madigan, Ballingrane, treasurer and Kevin Hartnett, Ballingrane, secretary. Mrs Nora Hawkes, Kilbehy and Gerard Madigan were elected council members.


Twelve members enrolled at that first meeting. They were Patrick Liston, Knockdrumin; Gerard Madigan, Derry; Stephen Madigan, Ballingrane; Mrs. Nora Hawkes, Kilbeha; Eileen Noonan, Kilbeha; Michael Madigan, Ballyvocogue; Michael Madigan, Kilbeha; Michael O’Donnell, Boolaglass; Mary Madigan, Ballingrane, Mrs P. Liston, Knockdrumin, Timothy Walsh, Boolaglass and Kevin Hartnett, Ballingrane. These members formed the foundation of a centre which has distinguished itself down through the years, by its deep commitment to the aims of the PTAA, by the many productions of talent shows and success in readorí’ competitions.
